Just stumbled across this quote. It beautifully encapsulates something I’ve been searching for the last few years.

The “reality” and “identity” of archaic man was centred in sensuous self-awareness and identification with a close, ever present and keenly sensed world of nature: for us, our “self” tends to be “realised” in a much more shadowy, abstract, mental world…
This “objective” identity seems to have been fully integrated into a cosmic system that was at once perfectly sacred and perfectly worldly. There is no question that the Indian (Re: Palaeolithic hunter gatherers) in the “scared city” felt himself completely at home in his world and perfectly understood his right place in it.
